You said yes! YAY! Now it’s time to start celebrating — and what better way than with your engagement photos? This session is the start of your wedding story, and it’s such a fun way to capture who you are together before the big day.
One of the first questions I get from couples is: “Where should we do our engagement session?”
Don’t worry — I’ve got you covered! Whether you’re dreaming of rolling bluegrass hills, a cozy downtown vibe, or something completely unique, here’s how to find the perfect spot for your photos.
1. Choose Somewhere That Feels Like You
Your engagement session should feel like your story. Think about places that are special to you both or your favorite “date night” spots. Maybe it’s where you had your first date, your favorite coffee shop, or the farm where you love to take long walks.
2. Match the Vibe of Your Wedding
If your wedding will be elegant and classic, consider a sophisticated location — like a historic estate or a beautiful garden like the UK Arboretum. If your wedding day will be more relaxed and outdoorsy, let’s find a spot that matches that energy, like the trails of Brushy Fork or a local park at golden hour.
Creating visual harmony between your engagement session and your wedding day helps tell a cohesive story — plus it’s fun to incorporate your engagement photos into your wedding decor!
3. Pay Attention to the Light (and the Season!)
The secret to dreamy engagement photos? Gorgeous light. I always recommend scheduling your session in the morning or evening — that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset when everything glows!
Kentucky’s seasons each have their own beauty:
🌸 Spring brings blooming dogwoods and soft colors.
🌿 Summer gives us lush green vegetation and warm sunsets.
🍁 Fall means colorful trees and cozy vibes.
❄️ Winter can feel timeless and romantic (especially if there’s a little snow!).
4. Coordinate Your Outfits With the Season
The season should dictate your outfits (probably obvious but true!). For starters, think soft, neutral colors for at least one of you. I am an avid believer in flowy dresses and at least one dressy outfit. All photographers are different but for my engagement sessions you can plan one dressy outfit and one “casual” outfit that may allow more “fun” poses.
5. Make It an Experience
Why not turn your engagement session into a beautiful memory? Spend the evening exploring somewhere new together, grab dinner afterward, or even plan a weekend trip to one of Kentucky’s charming small towns. It’s not just about the photos — it’s about celebrating this season of life!! It’s such an honor to spend this special moment with you! Let’s have a great time and create beautiful photos!
